Many (but not all) cards with Toil tend to be expensive, making the toil exertion almost required․

Toil X is a numeric Loaded Keyword that gives the owner of that card a chance to modify its Twilight Cost by -X when it is played by exerting one or more characters of that card's Culture. You cannot exert the same character multiple times, but you also are not forced to perform any exertions at all if you can otherwise afford the hefty Twilight Cost normally associated with such cards.


Rules Entries[edit]

When you play a card that has the toil keyword, you may reduce its twilight cost by the number specified. You do this by exerting one of your characters of the same culture as that card.


You may exert multiple characters of the same culture. Each different character you exert reduces the twilight cost by the number specified. You may exert a given character only once when playing a toil card.

Archery: Discard this condition to make the fellowship archery total +2.

Seclusion (12U23) Elven Event • Maneuver Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.)

Spot an Elf companion to discard a condition from play.

Taking the High Ground (12U24) Elven Condition • Support Area Toil 1. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –1.)

Archery: Discard an character from hand to make the fellowship archery total +1.

Each time the fellowship moves from an underground site, return your Elf to your hand.

Take Up the Bow (13R26) Elven Condition • Support Area Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.) Archery: Discard this from play and spot 3 Elf archers to discard a minion from play. Each of those archers loses archer and cannot gain archer.
New-awakened (11U38) Gandalf Event • Fellowship Spell. Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.) Spot a Wizard to discard 2 conditions from play.
Discoveries (12R26) Gandalf Event • Fellowship Spell. Toil 3. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –3.)

Spot a Wizard and X other companions to examine the top X cards of your draw deck. Replace those cards in any order.

Guardian (12U50) Gondor Condition • Support Area Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.)

Skirmish: If a companion is not assigned to a skirmish, discard this condition to have him or her replace an unbound companion skirmishing a minion.

Protecting the Hall (11U149) Rohan Condition Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.) Bearer must be a Man.

Assignment: Discard this condition from play to make bearer defender +1.

Cast Out (12R108) Rohan Condition • Support Area Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.)

Maneuver: Spot a Man and discard this condition to exert a minion.

Maneuver: Spot a mounted Man and discard this condition to return an exhausted minion to its owner’s hand.

Habits of Home (11R165) Shire Condition Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.)

Bearer must be a Hobbit. Limit 1 per bearer. Each time the fellowship moves from a dwelling or forest site, remove .

Poisonous Words (12R75) Men Event • Maneuver,Regroup Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.)

Add for each card you can spot.

Champion Orc (11C111) Orc Minion • Orc Toil 2. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –2.)
Undisciplined (11R141) Orc Event • Assignment Toil 3. (For each character you exert when playing this, its twilight cost is –3.) Assign an minion to a companion (except the Ring-bearer).

Make each of your minions strength +2 until the regroup phase.

Each time an lurker wins a skirmish, you may make the Free Peoples player discard the top 2 cards of his or her draw deck.

To play, spot a card in your support area. Spot a companion to draw a card for each wound on that companion (and draw an additional card if you can spot a Nazgûl).
