Worlds 2006

Worlds 2006 was the fifth World Championship for the Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game, ran by Decipher at Gen Con in August 2006. Christian Kriesel became World Champion, with Seth Maser the runner-up.

Very little about this event survives in the Wayback Machine: no coverage, schedule or top 16 list has been found, only the champion's deck and forum posts.

Format

Decipher's 2006 Organized Play Overview laid out the championship season:

• Territorial Open Championships in April and May; the top two of each received a bye to Day 2 of Worlds.
• The North American Continental Championship in June at Origins, a one-day event with no prequalification; the top 4 received a bye to Day 2 of Worlds. The European, Asian and Australian Continentals were to be announced.
• The World Championship in August at Gen Con:
  • Day 1: open to all players
  • Day 2: Day 1 qualifiers, Territorial byes and Continental Champions
  • Day 3: the top 16 finalists

The deck format is not stated in any archived source found so far. The Hunters was released in June 2006, two months before the event, so a Standard format of the time would have included it.

Results

• World Champion: Christian Kriesel. On Day 2 he played a Refuge fellowship with a Corsair shadow side, then switched his shadow side to Nazgûl / Morgul orcs for Day 3 in response to the metagame (Sméagol site control and Redhorn Pass were expected to hurt the Corsairs). The full Day 3 deck is in the cited article, and was reposted on The Last Homely House.
• Runner-up: Seth Maser, with a Ring-bound Hobbit / Evil Men archery deck, according to a player who wrote up the deck on CobraCards.
