Online World Championship

From LOTR-TCG Wiki

The Online World Championship was a World Championship for the Lord of the Rings Online TCG (LOTRO), the digital version of the game that Decipher ran with Worlds Apart. It was announced for October 2006 alongside the paper World Championship, with monthly qualifiers through 2006, but no record has been found of the championship itself ever being played.

Plan[edit]

Decipher's 2006 Organized Play Overview gave the Online TCG its own championship season[1]:

  • World Championship Qualifiers (WCQs), monthly from February to September: any player could enter, and the winner earned a bye into Day 2 of the Online World Championship.
  • Online World Championship in October, over two weekends:
    • Weekend 1, Saturday: an open qualifier for all players
    • Weekend 1, Sunday: the Day 2 event for qualified players
    • Weekend 2, Saturday: the final 16
    • Weekend 2, Sunday: the rest of the finals, if needed
  • An online World Cup team championship in July, where "online players from around the world will have the chance to compete for king and country".

Qualifiers[edit]

The WCQs were written up on the Online TCG's site by Steve "Factor", with a review of each top 8 and an interview with the winner.

Month Players Winner Notes
February 2006 65 Bartek "nutrin" Starypan (5-1) Gandalf/Ents with Lurker orcs; half the top 8 played Lurker swarm[2]
March 2006 43 Stephan "Pip" Smuts (5-1) Runner-up JR1 also received a bye[3]
April 2006 51 Pawel "Walther13" Sobczak (6-0) Ferny / Evil Men site control with Ranger / Ithilien Blade[4]
May 2006 42 Orian "orian" Gissler "The orian deck": a 100-card Mellon discard deck[5]
June 2006 ? Orian "orian" Gissler His second WCQ win in a row[6]

No WCQ write-ups after June 2006 have been found.

What happened[edit]

By late summer 2006, players on the Online TCG forums were asking what had become of the championship. One wrote on August 16 that "if the idea of an Online World Championship has been dropped it would be nice to have some info"[7]. Another wrote on September 17: "You've stopped having WCQs. You canceled one of the events and then they stopped happening."[8]

The Online TCG's April 2007 event calendar still listed an "Online World Championship qualifier"[9], but no Online World Championship, in 2006 or later, appears anywhere in the archive. If you know whether it was held, please add it here.
