Strategy[edit]
Mount Doom was a major paradigm shift for the Shire culture, as powerful cards like Chance Observation (10C106) and Narrow Escape (10U111) encouraged deck-building strategies that leaned away from the hobbits' traditional supporting roles and control/tempo builds. Hobbits were becoming their own champions.
At the head of this movement was Sam, Great Elf Warrior, who could be placed in an all-hobbit starting fellowship, and immediately be as strong as Eomer, Faramir, Boromir, etc.
Furthermore, with a proper warrior in the Shire ranks, a number of "survival-mode" cards could now be turned to more aggressive use--cards like Hobbit Sword (1C299) , There and Back Again (1C317) , Dagger Strike (1C102) and A Promise (2R112) .
Because Great Elf Warrior maintains the traditional ability to take the ring if Frodo dies, he still functions as a safety net for your Free Peoples--and because of his unique game text, he can be particularly effective in that role, being less vulnerable to getting overwhelmed than most other hobbits. Notice that even if Sam is the only hobbit in your Fellowship, he will still be strength +1 because his game text allows you to spot him as a Shire companion.
With additional Shire companions released in Shadows, Great Elf Warrior can be made even stronger in post-Shadows formats.
