To use this follower, a Threat must be paid each turn, else Gwaihir will remain dormant in the Support Area

Aid is a loaded keyword exclusive to Followers which describes a recurring cost that must be paid every turn to utilize the follower. At the start of the Maneuver phase, the follower's owner may optionally pay the Aid cost to transfer the follower to a Companion (if Free Peoples) or Minion (if Shadow) for the rest of the turn, and gain access to any abilities it might have.

Followers (and the Aid keyword) were introduced in set 15, The Hunters. They were an attempt to revisit the concept of faraway helpers that was first explored with Allies in the first two blocks of the game. The primary balance issue with allies was that strong abilities would be paid for once and used indefinitely, so a repeated upkeep Aid cost made balancing followers much more fine-grained.
