Race to Mount Doom League Kit (TTT Edition)
The Race to Mount Doom League Kit (The Two Towers Edition) was the first iteration of the popular Race to Mount Doom league event-in-a-box, released by Decipher in October 2002[1]. The kit contained everything required to run a Race to Mount Doom multi-week league event, albeit packaged in different tiers to serve different purposes[2].
Kit Versions[edit]
The Base Kit ($30 + shipping) was intended for use by retailers, and included the following:
- A full 9-site wall mat for recording race path modifiers.
- Instruction Manual (Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish).
- Various game text modifiers on a static cling sheet that could be attached to the wall mat.
- A dry-erase marker for recording placements on the mat.
- A foil copy of Faramir, Son of Denethor (0P16) and Éowyn, Lady of Rohan (0P17) .
- A set of 3 Ringwraith Pins (gold, silver, bronze).
- 12 Foil cards from The Fellowship of the Ring set.
- A 18" x 60" Race to Mount Doom league banner and other advertisement support (if the retailer was part of the Retail Fellowship program[3]).
An Expansion Kit ($20 + shipping) could be purchased to extend the life of the base kit by adding the following:
- 12 more Foil card prizes
- 3 more Pins, either Elven or Moria.
- Another foil copy of Éowyn and Faramir.
For $65, a Deluxe Kit would include one base kit and two expansions, ensuring that all three cultures are represented as pins.
Unlike earlier league kits, a Home Kit edition could also be had for $15 (plus shipping), which included everything in the base kit except for pins, FOTR foils, and banner. However, the wall mat was an abbreviated 5-site path, and as a result facilitated shorter leagues (4-6 weeks, as opposed to 8-10 for the retailer version).
Game Text Modifiers[edit]
On the first run of a Race to Mount Doom league, organizers would reference the included list of modifiers, which in the left column are arranged in rough order from beneficial (at the top) to detrimental (at the bottom). After the first run using that column, players were encouraged to mix-and-match the remaining modifiers or even add their own.
The modifiers included with the TTT edition of the kit were as follows[4]:
First Run:
- Your starting companions may have a total twilight cost of 6 instead of 4.
- At the start of each of your fellowship phases, you may take any card into hand from your draw deck.
- Each time your fellowship moves, you may draw a card.
- Your weapons lose all Damage bonuses.
- For each companion over 4, each of your opponents may draw a card at the start of his or her Shadow phase.
- Each time your fellowship moves, add a burden.
- Your opponent's minions are not roaming.
- While you can spot 5 or more companions, your move limit is -1.
- Each time a companion is played, that companion comes into play exhausted (except at site 1).
Supplements:
- Skirmish: Discard 3 cards from hand to make your companion or minion strength +1.
- Shadow: Discard 3 cards from hand to play a condition from your discard pile.
- While you can spot a Dwarf companion, an Elf companion, and Gandalf, your move limit is +1.
- You may not perform a maneuver phase action.
- Your starting companions must have a total twilight cost of 3 or less.
- You may not play a Man.
- At the start of each regroup phase, you must discard a card from your hand.
- Each time your fellowship moves, add ( if you can spot 6 companions).
- You must bid at least 6 burdens.
