Sword-wall is rarely played. As a site liberation card, it's overshadowed by That Is No Orc Horn, which has the same cost and cultural enforcement but a more-useful secondary effect. As a direct wounding card, it can't kill minions and comes so late in the turn that it's unlikely to help kill any minion that wasn't going to lose its skirmish anyway. Elves generally don't have any skirmish phase wounding to speak of, other than the wound from winning a skirmish, and the spotting requirement limits this to Elven decks.

!Sword-wall is a versatile event for Elven fellowships, allowing in-skirmish site liberation while most other methods in Towers Block are after a skirmish has been won or during the Regroup phase. If you don't need to liberate a site, the secondary action maintains usefulness against minions with abilities requiring an exertion like Wulf (who may be otherwise unwoundable to Elves because of Hides) and Orc Cutthroat, with companions such as Lorien Swordsman and Fereveldir, or to simply lower a minion's vitality in a culture which largely lacks damage bonuses.
The card is mainly useful for its site liberation effect. Liberating a site unexpectedly can throw off skirmish bonuses for cards like Dunlending Elder in Dunland Site Control or Tower Walkway in Besiegers. While there are a lot of cultures that can control sitesIsengard, Sauron, Dunland, Raider, Men, and Uruk-hai cultures all cansite control Shadow decks tend to be pretty predictable, since they need to start setting up their site control ASAP. If your opponent hasn't played a card that mentions controlling sites by about site 4, you can probably safely assume they're not going to.

The aimed exertion will cause a minion to be affected by the suite of Elven conditions which cripple wounded minions: Blades Drawn, Killing Field, and Lorien is Most Welcome. It can also be used to prepare a minion for Feathered, or chained with Night Without End to effectively deal 2 wounds to any minion. Sword-wall can be used to exert minions skirmishing the Ring-bearer, who may then finish them off with cards like Frying Pan, Cliffs of Emyn Muil, or Power According to his Stature.
As a wounding card, Sword-wall is fine but unremarkable. It's useful for shutting down minions with obnoxious skirmish phase or regroup phase exertion abilities like Orc Scouting Band or Isengard Worker. It can also set up various Elven effects that spot wounded minions, like Lorien Swordsman, Blades Drawn, Feathered, and Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men. You can also just use it to notch an extra wound on a minion to make sure it dies when it loses its skirmish, if you'd rather. The cost is negligible since it comes so late in the turn, unless you're planning to move again this round or playing against Raiders, who can respond with cards like Whirling Strike.

Unlike most events, Sword-wall has two eligible phases and can also be used to counter regroup-phase site control such as Attack on Helm's Deep or after all skirmishes have been resolved to clear the card out of the Free People's hand without bringing risk to a companion skirmishing an enduring minion.

* Elven cards that want to spot wounded minions, like Lorien Swordsman, Blades Drawn, Feathered, and Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men.
* It's an Elven skirmish event, and there are lots of cards that benefit from or grant benefits to those. Notable examples include Cirdan, the Shipwright, Galadriel, Lady Redeemed, Elladan, Son of Elrond, Elrohir, Son of Elrond, Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor, and Galadriel's Silver Ewer.

Because the 3 Elves you spot must be companions, Sword-wall does not make for a good splash card for Ring-bound Rangers, Knights, or Rohan, all of whom would greatly benefit from another skirmish-phase exertion. Since Uruk-Hai Beserkers and enduring minions benefit from being exerted, Sword-wall should be used with caution when skirmishing these enemies but maintains situational usefulness, such as to prevent Berserk Slayer's devastating ability. Further, it is rather expensive at [2] twilight, and may enable a Shadow player to play skirmish events (especially Southrons, whose events tend to be expensive themselves) or cause a double-move to become too dangerous.

Strategy

Sword-wall is rarely played. As a site liberation card, it's overshadowed by That Is No Orc Horn (5C14) , which has the same cost and cultural enforcement but a more-useful secondary effect.

The card is mainly useful for its site liberation effect. Liberating a site unexpectedly can throw off skirmish bonuses for cards like Dunlending Elder (6C2) in Dunland Site Control or Tower Walkway (7C315) in Besiegers. While there are a lot of cultures that can control sites— Isengard, Sauron, Dunland, Raider, Men, and Uruk-hai cultures all can—site control Shadow decks tend to be pretty predictable, since they need to start setting up their site control ASAP. If your opponent hasn't played a card that mentions controlling sites by about site 4, you can probably safely assume they're not going to.

As a wounding card, Sword-wall is fine but unremarkable. It's useful for shutting down minions with obnoxious skirmish phase or regroup phase exertion abilities like Orc Scouting Band (1U270) or Isengard Worker (3C62) . It can also set up various Elven effects that spot wounded minions, like Lórien Swordsman (4C78) , Blades Drawn (4U60) , Feathered (4U66) , and Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men (10R6) . You can also just use it to notch an extra wound on a minion to make sure it dies when it loses its skirmish, if you'd rather. The cost is negligible since it comes so late in the turn, unless you're planning to move again this round or playing against Raiders, who can respond with cards like Whirling Strike (4C260) .
