Strategy[edit]
Of the two Rings introduced in The Fellowship of the Ring, Isildur's Bane is for most situations preferable to the common The One Ring, The Ruling Ring (1C2) . Both the additional Vitality and more flexible Response action allow the Ring-bearer to soak up more damage from the rest of the Fellowship.
The major downside compared to The Ruling Ring is that each wound is converted at a cost of two Burdens per wound, which ultimately makes IB more susceptible to direct Corruption effects. It also cannot be ignored that this effectively reduces the total number of convertible wounds from 10 to 5, which can add up against Shadow strategies with Damage bonuses. However, this downside comes with the flexibility of turning any wound into burdens regardless of phase, which is handy for intercepting surprise wounds.
In later formats, this Ring is all but ignored in favor of other options. The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles (4R1) has a better vitality and strength bonus as well as better burden conversion rate, which makes it the go-to in Movie formats.
Strengths and Weaknesses[edit]
Strong Versus...[edit]
Weak Versus...[edit]
- Heavy burden adding and Nazgul in general
Rulings[edit]
The One Ring's first paragraph is a special ability, and therefore optional. The second paragraph of game text is not optional, so once The One Ring is "worn", all wounds taken must be "converted" to burdens. When you are about to take a wound and wear The One Ring, you must take a burden (or burdens) for that wound.
