Impatient and Angry (4R307) is a Shire Event from the The Two Towers set. In Towers block it is the only strength pump available for Sam and, since there are none for Frodo, the only one for a Ring-bearer. It is also the only way to pump any Hobbit in that format without depending on another culture.

Strategy[edit]

Gameplay Strategy[edit]

With a sword, Impatient and Angry gets Sam up to 8 strength: enough to survive a strong minion, but only enough to beat the weakest ones in a skirmish. Holding two or more in hand may allow Sam to win a wider variety of skirmishes but will leave him nearly dead and clog up your hand until then. In Towers block, that about sums up the value of this card.

In Towers standard, however, A Promise (2R112) and Rosie Cotton, Hobbiton Lass (1U309) provides the base strength to win skirmishes. The Shire Countryside (3R113) offers a reason to remove burdens in the middle of a skirmish -- to heal back Boromir, Son of Denethor (1U97) , Merry, Friend to Sam (1R302) , or exertions caused by Sting, Baggins Heirloom (5R116) . This can be one of the best ways to rearm the Fellowship for a double move.

Remember that you don't always have to have more strength than the opponent to win. If removing burdens to trigger The Shire Countryside (3R113) is your real goal, playing a copy and then using Cliffs of Emyn Muil (4R299) to kill a minion with 1 vitality will achieve the same effect. Mind Your Own Affairs (4U312) and No Use That Way (5R113) can also be used for a choke deck that is already playing Sam, Faithful Companion (1R310) .

Deckbuilding Strategy[edit]

In Towers block, there are no other choices for increasing Sam's strength beyond what Hobbit Sword (1C299) can offer and sometimes (as Sam, Nice Sensible Hobbit (5U115) typically can't benefit from Severed His Bonds (4C319) ) no other choices for increasing his survivability. Even that is not reason enough to include Impatient and Angry. Because of the lack of support in the format, Fellowships including Sam tend to just let him die or have him take The Ring after killing Frodo to clear burdens. Brace of Coneys (4C298) is a much more reliable way of peeling burdens, while Sam, Samwise the Brave (4C316) can use his vitality to keep burdens from being added in the first place.

In Towers standard, The Shire Countryside (3R113) provides some incentive for using the event and A Promise (2R112) can even make winning skirmishes an obtainable goal. Frodo's Cloak (4R303) is more reliable and should be prioritized in a deck, but when a player wants to remove burdens in a skirmish more than once or twice over the course of the game its uniqueness can get in the way. If for some strange reason you're not using Smeagol and Not Listening (6C43) and can't wait until the Fellowship phase for Brace of Coneys, Impatient and Angry may be a reasonable alternative.

Though it seems to be doing double duty as a strength pump and a burden removal tool, that it can only benefit Sam makes it a liability at times. Frodo in particular will need skirmish pumps so it should take a backseat to Hobbit Intuition (1C296) and potentially even Hobbit Stealth (1C298) . Relying too heavily this event (to heal back exertions on Boromir, Son of Denethor (1U97) with The Shire Countryside, for example) makes a deck extremely vulnerable to condition discarding.

Once you get to Movie block and beyond, Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom (10C112) achieves the real desired function (removing burdens in a skirmish) better in every way: it works in the middle of a skirmish, it works regardless of who is skirmishing, and it doesn't require any specific companion to have spare vitality. So Fair, So Desperate (8C111) and Chance Observation (10C106) from King block are the best strength pumps ever printed for Hobbits and should always be chosen first in a Shire deck. If you're not playing Hobbits specifically and just need a bit of insurance to keep Sam (or any other Hobbit) alive, The Tale of the Great Ring (10U116) is unmatched. Hope is Kindled (12C123) tries to carry on the torch in War of the Ring, but if you're able to pick between the two then the correct choice is neither.

Strengths and Weaknesses[edit]

Synergizes With...[edit]

Strong Versus...[edit]

Weak Versus...[edit]

  • Easterlings -- if you would benefit from removing a burden in the skirmish, they benefit more from spotting them and can keep wins out of reach
  • Beatdown decks, which may keep wins out of reach for Sam and will greatly stress his vitality if he is skirmishing
  • Wounding decks, particularly Southrons which may surprise Sam with Whirling Strike (4C260) and kill him after he exerts
