Hinder
Hinder (with its sister verb Restore) is a mechanic introduced by the Player's Council in set V3, The Pelennor Fields. To hinder a card is to flip it face-down, which temporarily disables that card until its owner reconciles, when it is automatically restored. Other card effects may also restore a hindered card early.
While hindered, the card's game text is not active and no aspect of the card can be spotted or counted. For almost all intents and purposes, the card does not exist while it is hindered. The only exceptions are "passive play restrictions" that still exist while the card is hindered: you cannot play another copy of a unique hindered card, or play a second card of the same Item Class on a character if the first is hindered.
Rules Entries[edit]
.
- "Hindering" a card means to temporarily disable that card, making it unable to be used for most purposes. It remains hindered until "restored", which can be an effect on cards but also happens automatically when players reconcile.
- When a card is hindered, flip it face down, but do not remove any borne cards, stacked cards, or tokens. Borne and stacked cards are not themselves hindered unless the hindering effect says so.
- Hindered cards are not hidden information; any player may request to inspect a hindered card as they could any other card in play.
- If all players agree, an alternate hinder indication can be used, such as by turning the card 90 degrees, 180 degrees, or using a special token. These options may be more convenient in situations where a card is loaded up with tokens.
- Tokens on hindered cards cannot be spotted, counted, reinforced, removed, or added to (even if there are zero tokens). Hindered characters thus cannot be exerted, wounded, or healed.
- Exception: If the Ring-bearer is hindered, burdens may be spotted and counted, but they still cannot be added or removed.
- If a character is hindered before it is about to be wounded, exerted, or healed, then the wound, exertion, or heal does not resolve.
Anduril, Legend Remade (V3_18)
hinders a companion as it is about to be wounded. Because that companion is now hindered, the wound token cannot be added.
- The entire game text of hindered cards does not apply. This includes triggers, special abilities, modifiers, keywords, and other effects.
- Other non-game-text card traits such as title, culture, card type, all flavors of subtype (Race, Item Class, etc) also do not apply on hindered cards.
- This means that hindered cards cannot be spotted or targeted by their title, culture, card type, or race/item class by any game effect. They also cannot be counted by effects which count how many of certain cards you can spot.
If there are 6 companions on the table, but 1 of them is hindered, Úlairë Enquëa, Lieutenant of Morgul (1U231)
can only spot 5 companions and so cannot use his ability.
- The side/alignment of a hindered card continues to apply.
- This means that hindered cards can be spotted or targeted as "a Free Peoples card" or "a Shadow card", or as "a hindered Free Peoples card" or "a hindered Shadow card".
- If a hindered card does not have a side, such as the One Ring, then it can only be spotted or targeted as "a card" or "a hindered card".
- Numeric stats on hindered cards do not apply. Do not treat stats such as strength, vitality, or twilight cost as zero, but instead treat them as if the stat doesn't exist.
Grond, Hammer of the Underworld (8R103)
, removes X tokens to discard a Free Peoples card with a twilight cost of X. A hindered Elrond, Lord of Rivendell (1R40)
does not have a twilight cost of 4, neither does he have a twilight cost of 0: he has no twilight cost at all. Thus Grond is unable to discard a hindered Elrond, even if 0 tokens are removed, as Elrond is not currently a "Free Peoples card with a twilight cost".
- If a borne card is being hindered but not the card it is borne by, all stat bonuses it provides are temporarily revoked from its bearer.
- This means that death can occur if a card granting a vitality bonus is hindered on an exhausted character, or corruption can occur if a resistance-boosting card is hindered.
- Cards which are borne by hindered cards cannot interact with their bearer but are otherwise still in play and active; they can be interacted with and use their game text normally.
Gimli's Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon (7R9)
is borne by Gimli, who becomes hindered. As Gimli has no game text and no stats, he cannot gain damage or strength bonuses. However, when there are 3 threats, the fellowship archery total is still +1, as this does not rely on Gimli to interact with the effect.
Gwemegil (1R47)
is borne by Arwen, who becomes hindered. Gwemegil's skirmish special ability cannot exert Arwen, but it can still be activated and discard cards from hand to make nobody strength +1.
- Cards stacked on hindered cards also continue to be in play as normal. However, those cards are now stacked "on a Free Peoples/Shadow card" and so may lose the ability to fulfill requirements of certain special abilities.
If Slaked Thirsts (7U14)
is stacked on a condition which later is hindered, Slaked Thirsts' conditional ability is no longer able to be invoked, as it is merely stacked on "a hindered Free Peoples card".
- Although the game text of hindered cards does not apply, "passive play restriction" rules continue to be enforced on the hindered card. In general, if a new card play would result in an inconsistent game state once a hindered card has been restored, that play is disallowed.
- If a hindered card is unique, you cannot play another copy of that card with the same title. If the card is 2-dot or 3-dot, this applies if there are already 2 or 3 copies in play, respectively.
If you have a hindered Aragorn, and play a second Aragorn, this would be an inconsistent game state once the Free Peoples player reconciles, as there would be 2 Aragorns in play. Thus, the play is disallowed.
- If the hindered card is an item (possession or artifact), it continues to restrict its bearer from bearing any other cards of the same item class via play or transfer.
If Shadowfax (4R100)
is hindered on Gandalf, you cannot play a Horse of Rohan (4C283)
on Gandalf. Otherwise once Shadowfax was restored, you would have 2 mounts on 1 character, so it is disallowed. - However, note that the game text of such items does not apply, so any restrictions that come from the game text of a hindered card are ignored.
If Aragorn bears Andúril, Flame of the West (7R79)
, he cannot bear Aragorn’s Bow (1R90)
due to Anduril's game text. If Anduril is hindered, a Ranger’s Sword (1U112)
cannot be played on Aragorn due to passive item class restrictions. But because Anduril's game text does not apply, Aragorn's Bow can now be played. Upon being restored, Anduril's game text resumes being applied, upon which Aragorn's Bow would be discarded. - If a hindered card is a Companion, it continues to count towards the Rule of 9.
If you have 9 companions in play and 1 is hindered, playing another companion would result in there being 10 companions in play after reconciling, which is inconsistent with the Rule of 9, therefore it is disallowed.
- If a hindered card is a Companion, it continues to contribute towards the threat limit.
- If a hindered card is a Companion, it does not add 1 twilight when moving.
- If a card is hindered while in the process of evaluating a special ability or trigger on that card, the effects of that text continue to be executed until fulfilled.
- Hindered characters cannot be assigned to skirmishes.
- If an assigned character is hindered, they are immediately removed from the skirmish assignment, which may cancel it.
- If an actively skirmishing character is hindered, they are immediately removed from the skirmish, which may cancel it.
- Cards in out-of-play zones cannot be hindered. If a hindered card is discarded or otherwise moved to your hand, draw deck, dead pile, adventure deck, or discard pile, or removed from the game, it is flipped the correct way up and exits play as any other card.
- This does not count as the card being restored and thus does not trigger restore responses.
- Sites cannot be hindered. The One Ring however can be hindered.
- During the Regroup phase, if the fellowship has no unhindered companions, the Free Peoples player cannot choose to move.
If everyone is occupied or distracted, nobody can take charge leading the fellowship forward.
- While the Ring-bearer is hindered, they cannot be corrupted until restored.
