Strategy[edit]

Return of the King has companion cards for several of the various guards and soldiers defending Minas Tirith. Cirion? Well, he's certainly one of them.

If you play Cirion perfectly, always managing your hand correctly, he's 7 strength and 3 vitality, which honestly isn't bad for a filler starting companion at a 2 twilight cost. The problem is that he competes with Vorondil (7R127) , who is similar but has 7 strength more of the time and has a sometimes-useful ability on top of that, and Faramir, Ithilien Ranger (6P121) , who is always strength 7, has a questionably-useful ability, has occasionally-useful keywords, and can use Faramir's Bow (4R118) . If you're investing very heavily in Gondor—and why else are you looking at Z-list Gondorians?—then there are many better options, like Faramir, Captain of Gondor (4R116) , Alcarin, Warrior of Lamedon (5R31) , Denethor, Wizened Steward (7C86) , and Denethor, Lord of Minas Tirith (10R28) . Cirion just doesn't do anything in particular, and doesn't have any useful keywords like Knight. There's rarely any call for a companion this generic, especially one that needs so much micromanagement to be even moderately worthwhile.

He's one of a handful of Gondor cards in Return of the King that care about the size of your hand, like Derufin (7R87) , Dervorin (7U88) , and the rarely played Hasty Repairs (7U102) . Unlike his comrades-in-arms Derufin and Dervorin, Cirion just doesn't do anything to make him worthwhile when compared to the main characters of the story.

Strengths and Weaknesses[edit]

Synergizes With...[edit]

  • Technically, maintaining his ability will also maintain the conditions for Derufin (7R87) or Dervorin (7U88) . That's not so much "synergy" as "an interesting coincidence", though.

Weak Versus...[edit]

  • Cards that discard cards from your hand, especially unpredictable ones like Orc Inquisitor (1C268) .
  • He's not especially strong. Most Shadow decks are prepared to handle a strength 7 companion with no special abilities to speak of.

Trivia[edit]

  • Cirion's character does not have a name or credit in The Return of the King film. He's an uncredited cameo by film co-producer Rick Porras, appearing as one of the two soldiers guarding the Beacon of Minas Tirith. Cirion was named by Decipher, after one of the Stewards of Gondor who preceded Denethor from The Lord of the Rings novels' appendices.
