Strategy[edit]

Gameplay Strategy[edit]

A solid version of Ulaire Toldea, Winged Sentry fits well into multiple Ringwraith strategies. His ability to pile either burdens or wounds make him a good inclusion in a Nazgul corruption deck, a Morcs deck, or even a beatdown deck.

In a corruption deck, Toldea can easily pile up burdens, if the Free Peoples player chooses, or pile up exertions, perhaps setting up for a kill and subsequent Drawn to Its Power (1U211) trigger. His choice does become simpler when Gates of the Dead City (3R81) is on the table, as the Freeps player gets an exertion either way. He is fairly outshone by Úlairë Toldëa, Black Shadow (12U180) in post-Shadows formats, as recursion of Keening Wail (11R211) , Dark Fell About Him (13R178) , and Between Nazgûl and Prey (8R67) is often more useful.

Toldea shines best in a Morc strategy, as the typical choice of an exertion placed on the Ring-Bearer over a burden becomes dangerous. He can fuel Morgul Brute (7R188) with burdens, place exertions on Companions in hopes of a kill, or can force exertions onto the Ring-Bearer in some situations. He does, however, cost 6 twilight, so he would not be as helpful in a semi-swarm strategy. If Initiative Morcs are being played, Winged Sentry is less useful than Úlairë Toldëa, Wraith on Wings (7R219) , who can be played for potentially free.

Toldea can be a solid choice in a beatdown strategy, where either extra exertions or a few burdens to make Nazgûl Sword (1U218) a formidable weapon are welcome. He does face competition from Úlairë Toldëa, Thrall of the One (10R71) , who has both the ability to be a monster or be Damage +1.

Rulings[edit]

Because the effect is not optional, the Free Peoples can choose to carry it out before the skirmish resolution (overwhelm or apply wounds to the losing character). Doing so may allow a player to exert the companion that will soon be killed by Toldea anyway and sidestep his text.

Nearly everything that occurs during the game is some kind of action. Players perform actions to play cards, use special abilities, move their fellowships, reconcile, and so on.

Every action is either optional or required. An optional action is defined as: an action that uses the word "may," an event, or a special ability. All other actions are required actions.

If two or more required actions are occurring at the same time (for example, more than one "start of turn" action), the Free Peoples player decides in which order they occur.
