Strategy[edit]

Sturdy Stock is rarely played. Outside of Hunters Block, there are many better and more-consistent Dwarven pump events, particularly Dwarf-lords (13U4) , Awkward Moment (13C2) , Battle Tested (7U3) , and Honed (8C6) . All of these cards give a higher base strength bonus, and give more benefit under circumstances you can control rather than relying on your opponent to be playing a swarm of Hunter minions. They don't increase Damage +X, but there are generally better, more-consistent options to do that, particularly the artifact rings like Ring of Fury (9R+7) . In Hunter's Block play, you're unlikely to be playing a dwarf-specific pump event anyway because there are only three dwarfs in the whole format: Glóin, Son of Groin (15R6) , Thorin III, Stonehelm (17R6) , and three versions of Gimli. Even then, Axe-work (17U5) is generally more consistent, since it always gives at least +2 strength.

Strengths and Weaknesses[edit]

Strong Versus...[edit]

Weak Versus...[edit]

  • An opponent playing only one Hunter minion at a time.

Rulings[edit]

Similar to Sharp Defense (12U13) , if there's one Hunter minion in play, you have to grant the dwarf +1 strength and Damage +1. You can't choose the +2 strength instead.

When a card has a conditional effect in parentheses, you can’t choose which one to use. You have to use the conditional effect if the condition is met.

Sharp Defense (12U13) adds no strength to a Dwarf who has resistance 4 or more and no possessions. You can't choose to use the +2 instead.
