Strategy
A middling-weak card, usually used as part of a Gollum splash in a corruption deck.
In a vacuum, about on par with It Wants to be Found (2U78) and The Ring is Mine! (10U97) . However, winning skirmishes with Gollum is fairly resource-intensive due to his generally low strength, and this card will clog up your hand until you do. To win skirmishes with Gollum, you'll generally need to invest in pumps or a secondary strategy like stacking threats, self-milling, or swarming minions. There are exceptions that can stand on their own, like Gollum, Stinker (5R25) and Gollum, Old Villain (6C40) , but even those aren't especially reliable. Every card you dedicate to pumping up Gollum or focusing on a secondary strategy isn't a card dedicated to adding burdens or supporting your main Shadow culture. Heavy Burden (7U60) is easier to trigger, since you only need a threat, 1 Twilight, and Gollum still alive in the Regroup Phase, but that card is still awfully situational. As a result, both cards are rarely played. Trap Is Sprung (13R57) is significantly stronger, but only available in later formats.
Remember that Gollum wins his skirmish if his opponent is killed or discarded, possibly with a card like They Stole It (6R46) .
Strengths and Weaknesses
Synergizes With...
- Any card that adds burdens, like It Wants to be Found (2U78) and The Ring is Mine! (10U97)
- Gollum usually needs some help winning his skirmish, from pumps like We Must Have It (5C30) or direct wounding like They Stole It (6R46) .
Strong Versus...
- Alternate Ring-bearers with low Resistance
- Decks that mainly lose skirmishes, although most of these decks also have strong burden removal
Weak Versus...
- Burden removal, especially Sam, Son of Hamfast (1C311) and A Light in His Mind (10U108)
- High-resistance Ring-bearers, either inherently (any version of Frodo, especially Frodo, Resolute Hobbit (10P121) ) or from cards like Salt from the Shire (11R171) or Galadriel's Silver Ewer (18R11)
