Strategy
Thandronen, Veteran Protector is pretty close to useless. In theory, he can counter cards like Goblin Swarms (1R183)
, Gnawing, Biting, Hacking, Burning (6U63)
, or Their Marching Companies (8U107)
. In practice, there are relatively few commonly-played cards that stack minions on other cards, and Elven decks have stronger and more-versatile tools to do something about the card the minions are stacked on. Why play Thandronen when you can play Haldir, Emissary of the Galadhrim (4C71)
, That Is No Orc Horn (5C14)
, Company of Archers (4R61)
, or Secret Sentinels (2R20)
? His exertion cost, low strength for his cost, and spotting requirement just add insult to injury.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strong Versus...
- He's only useful against cards that stack minions on themselves or on sites, like Goblin Swarms (1R183)
, Gnawing, Biting, Hacking, Burning (6U63)
, or Their Marching Companies (8U107)
. And even then, there are better options.
Weak Versus...
- Scaffolding (6U73)
and Library of Orthanc (9R+39)
- It's gonna be hard to get much use out of a five strength elf that has questionably useful gametext.
Trivia
- Thandronen's character does not have a name in The Two Towers film. He's played by New Zealand actor Ben Fransham in an uncredited role. His name is apparently a Decipher creation, and isn't based on any other character's name.
- The two sons referred to in his lore text are Fereveldir, Son of Thandronen (4C67)
and Ferevellon, Son of Thandronen (4C68)
. They are also uncredited background roles in the film proper, and their relationship is also a Decipher invention.
