Strategy
Corsair War Galley is a potent initiative tool for the Raider culture. With Corsairs' various token-adding tricks, it is easy to gain the threshold of 6 Raider tokens on any card.
Because of the fact that Corsair War Galley spots Raider tokens on any Raider card, you can easily gain initiative and cycle your hand with Ships of Great Draught (8R65) . This fits snugly in either an Initiative Southron or Corsair strategy, as both need initiative to be completely effective, and having recursion in Ships of Great is a helpful bonus.
Within the Corsair archetype, gaining initiative allows for powerful cards like Corsair Lookout (8U56) and Wind That Sped Ships (8C66) to function. When you have multiple copies of the War Galley and a fleet of boats in your support area, you can discard a galley to allow for a well-timed Fierce in Despair (7R148) .
Corsair War Galley enables the Southron Initiative strategy, wherein you use the Southrons from Return of the King and Southron Invaders (6C81) in conjunction with Ships of Great Draught (8R65) and the War Galley (sometimes also with a few Corsairs for token adding) to direct-wound your opponent to death.
When playing this card, you need to watch out for possession removal, such as Roll of Thunder (4U99) , Galadriel, Lady Redeemed (10R11) , and in Expanded and Standard there is Throne of Minas Tirith (17R36) and For the Mark (12C114) . To counter this, you can play multiple copies of Ships of Great Draught (8R65) to recur it, and you can play multiples of the Galley itself, as it spots all Raider tokens in play. Another counter to this card are the Mount Doom initiative conditions, such as Glimpse of Fate (10U12) and Hardy Garrison (10U33) . An easy counter to this is to simply play your worst minion, triggering the conditions, then play the rest of your hand.
