General Strategy

The Bridge of Khazad-Dum is probably the most iconic site of the TCG. It is the only site 5 in Fellowship Block, and must be used by all players. It was released in set 1, but the Balrog itself was not printed until the Mines of Moria set 2, so its text at the time was essentially a hint of things to come. This site has a high shadow number, so the fellowship typically makes a lot of twilight travelling here. It is Underground, so it discards Asfaloth; Bill Ferny, SSF; Black Steed and Bill the Pony, and it cheapens the Cave Troll of Moria, SotBP. It does of course allow the Balrog to be played (At reduced cost) from hand or draw deck. There are some disadvantages of this site, the first being that it cannot play the Balrog from your discard pile, so if you draw your Balrog early you will have to hold onto it if you intend to play it (Assuming you have only one copy). The other issue is that the Balrog will be discarded when you leave this site, so players may take advantage of this to leave this site and rush to the next Sanctuary. On the other hand, the twilight reduction will almost always allow you to play Durin's Bane, even against a choke deck, and Flame of Udun is usually possible with a Goblin Runner. Also, having a guaranteed minion allows you to pack cards like The Balrog's Sword or Whip of Many Thongs without needing a 2-card combo, as you simply have to draw these cards before site 5, and the site does the rest for you.

In the Pre-Shadows Multipath Format, you can hit an opponent hard with this site and one of the Balrogs, but there is no longer a guarantee that you can get this site out, so site manipulation cards (Pathfinder, Speak "Friend" and Enter) are advised.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strong Versus...

  • Choke Fellowships (There's always a good amount of twilight at this site)
  • Fellowships that are ill-prepared for a balrog (Low Strength, lack of Stealth etc.)
  • Fast Fellowships (If they have moved too quickly down the path, they may not have set up their fellowship much and get hit hard by this site)
  • Site Manipulation decks (This site is always on the path, and cannot be avoided)

Weak Versus...

  • Anti-Balrog Strategies (If you decide to use him)
  • Tank decks, which flood the twilight pool regardless

Example Decks

  • Every Fellowship Block deck uses this card.
