Siege of Gondor (or SoG) is the first expansion set in King Block and the eighth expansion overall. It was released on March 10, 2004. The set contained 122 cards (40 commons, 40 uncommons, 40 rares, and 2 premium cards that only appeared in starter decks), all of which could appear in foil versions. Six rares from the set had Tengwar versions produced.

Themes and Mechanics
Following the pattern set by the first expansion of each of the previous two blocks, Siege of Gondor contained themes that centred around significant visual effects from the Return of the King: the Gondor Wraith subculture, and the giant spider Shelob, which appeared as the second minion in the Gollum culture.

Cultures
Siege of Gondor continued the same cultures as Return of the King, with a focus on Gollum, Gondor, Raider, Ringwraith and Sauron.

New Loaded Keyword
A character with Enduring get strength +2 for each wound on that character. Many cards with Enduring were given abilities which required healing the character as a cost, which led to a number of potential loops that needed to be corrected with errata or x-listing cards.

New Unloaded Keywords
Siege of Gondor introduced three new unloaded keywords
* Corsair, a subculture of Raider representing the pirates of Umbar
* Spider, a new race in the Gollum culture used for Shelob

While not a new keyword, Wraith appeared for the first time on Free Peoples cards as a subculture of Gondor, after previously appearing on three Sauron cards in Ents of Fangorn.

Starter Decks
The premium cards for the Siege of Gondor starter decks were Merry, Noble Warrior and Pippin, Guard of Minas Tirith. These two cards are notable as the first hobbits to appear as the face cards of a starter deck and the only hobbits ever printed with a base strength of 5 or more; the only other hobbit with a base strength greater than 3 is Tolman Cotton, who wouldn't be printed until set 12.
