Ring-bound is an Unloaded Keyword that appears on companions that have had their fates tied to the One Ring more tightly than usual, in particular Frodo, Sam, and Smeagol. Only companions can be Ring-bound, the Ring-bearer is always Ring-bound, and all companions that are not Ring-bound are instead unbound. Allies and minions are never Ring-bound and never unbound.
Ring-bound is an Unloaded Keyword. It appears on a small handful of Free Peoples companions whose fates are inextricably tied to the One Ring. Also, the Ring-bearer is always Ring-bound, even if it doesn't say so on their card. (This last rule is only relevant with the alternate Ring-bearers, first introduced in Reflections.) All companions that are not Ring-bound are unbound. Allies and minions are never Ring-bound or unbound.

The primary game impact of Ring-bound is to dodge potent effects that only work on unbound characters, such as Grima, Wormtongue. There are however many Gollum, Gondor, and Shire Free Peoples cards which benefit Ring-bound companions, and several notable Raider, Sauron, and Gollum Shadow cards which target them.
The only characters with Ring-bound printed on their cards are all versions of Frodo, all versions of Sam, all companion versions of Bilbo, all versions of Smeagol, a handful of Gondor Ranger men from Towers Block (representing Faramir's company of rangers in Ithilien), and Boromir, Steward's Heir.

This keyword was first introduced in The Two Towers expansion, and was used to attempt to split the card base between characters who were with Frodo (Ring-bound) and characters who were not (unbound), with cards intentionally only affecting one or the other of these groups. At the time, this meant including Faramir and other Ithilien Rangers from Towers Block under the Ring-bound umbrella. Afterwards no further major additions were made to this exclusive group except for companion versions of Bilbo, such as Bilbo, Melancholy Hobbit.
Comprehensive Rules 4.0
After the introduction of the keyword, Decipher ruled that all copies of Frodo and Sam are Ring-bound, even if it wasn't in the game text. This was applied retroactively to preexisting cards as a rule instead of a mass errata. In addition, the Ring-bearer is always Ring-bound. This chiefly comes into play with the alternate ring-bearers first introduced in Reflections, such as Gimli, Bearer of Grudges or Boromir, Bearer of Council. Many of these characters are unbound if played normally, but Ring-bound if bearing the One Ring.
