General Strategy

Perhaps the hardest Gandalf to use effectively in Fellowship Block, The Grey Wizard supports a choke-style deck that plays a lot of stuff. If you're using this version of Gandalf, you will want as many companions with the Gandalf signet as possible, and ideally you'd want to start with this Gandalf so that he can make everyone else cheaper. Seeing as he promotes playing a lot of companions while maintaining a choke, The Nine Walkers would be a helpful card to make characters such as Aragorn twilight cost 0. Also, this Gandalf promotes a Gandalf signet Fellowship, so Trust Me As You Once Did and Gandalf's Wisdom are some good support cards. With several copies of Gandalf's Wisdom out and The Nine Walkers, you should be able to play almost everything in the Fellowship Phase for free. This will allow you to setup a powerful Fellowship while denying as much twilight as possible. Since starting with this Gandalf is advisable, Gandalf's Cart with Shire Lookout Point is a good combo, as it will allow you to stash any spare equipment on it until needed. This Gandalf needs to exert a lot to be truly effective, and Strength of Spirit can help with this, but be sure to have Gandalf's Staff out as soon as possible to make spells cheaper, otherwise Strength of Spirit detracts from the choking aspect of this deck.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strong Versus...

  • Expensive minions, such as Uruks and Nazgul.
  • Wounding decks, if you have many companions

Weak Versus...

  • Too Great and Terrible, as he exerts a lot.
  • Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul; The Number Must Be Few or Greed, if you let your Fellowship get too large.
